How many times a day do you sign onto facebook.com to check your profile?
If you were to ask someone this question, they may proceed to tell you once or twice a day. LIES. For the average college student, I would estimate that it falls into the range of 10 to 20 times a day. For the more obsessed user, it could even reach the levels of 30 times a day. I have to admit that I am one of those obsessive facebook users.
Truthfully, I wouldn’t be able to tell you exactly how I waste hours on this silly website, but I do. I refresh my profile in a neurotic way, thinking that I am popular enough to receive updated posts every other minute, but this is never true. I have adapted the popular “facbeook routine”:
1. Click Refresh (0:00)
2. Scroll Down to my wall (0:03)
3. Realize that no one new has posted on my wall (0:7)
4. Click “View More Photos of You” (0:11)
5. Realize that there are no new pictures (0:18)
6. Look at my mini-feed to stalk a few friends (0:22)
7. Repeat
While I alternate between checking my facebook and checking my email, I do have the occasional break. This is however, just to change classes. Once the hour hits – it’s time for me to take that 10-minute walk to my next class, where I will proceed to sit down, pull out my pen and paper, open up my laptop, and log-into facebook and perform my routine.
At least I am not alone. As I sit in class, third row back – fourth seat from the end of the row – there are 5 people within my view. Four of them have laptops open, three of whom are on facebook and one who is on her g-chat. It’s about 40 minutes into class and I think that I’ve seen more than enough photos from “Jessica’s” life. She has cycled through the same 20 pictures of herself about 4 times. (I’m assuming from a night-out this weekend) Her favorite (viewed 8-times so far) is the one of her in a skimpy pink tube top passed-out on a couch with one leg over the edge, and a male-friend sitting next to her thumbs-up smiling into the camera.
There is so much you could learn from a person’s facebook profile.
WARNING: Be careful of looking at new profiles & pictures of people you may not know. Look behind you to make sure that they are not sitting behind you. That would just be creepy if they saw you looking at their profile.
